Neil Marshall Swaps Out Horror for Crime Thriller with 'Duchess'

A Knockoff of a Guy Ritchie Film
Neil Marshall's latest film, "Duchess," is an action thriller that feels like a knockoff of a Guy Ritchie film. The film stars Charlotte Kirk as Scarlett, a small-time criminal who meets Robert (Colm Meaney), a handsome man who also just so happens to be a high-ranking member of a crime syndicate.
The film follows Scarlett and Robert as they fall in love and team up to take down a rival crime boss. However, their plan soon goes awry, and Scarlett finds herself in over her head. The film is full of the usual cliches of the genre, including overheated narration, tough tales, and incongruent needle drops that freeze frames with character names.
Marshall seems to want what Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino had in the early aughts. However, he doesn't quite have the same knack for dialogue or style. As a result, "Duchess" feels like a pale imitation of those classic films. If you're looking for an original and exciting crime thriller, you're better off looking elsewhere.
